CONTINENTAL KINGS emerged as the champions in the inaugural season of the Global Chess League beating Mumba Masters in the finals.
Buoyed by their success earlier in the day in defeating SG Alpine Warriors, the team of Triveni Continental Kings had a huge opportunity in front of them
The upGrad Mumba Masters were looking for a comeback following a crushing defeat earlier in the day. They had to win the match with as many game points as possible, to rejoin in the race for the top.
This was the second match to end in a huge upset as Triveni Continental Kings – who played with black pieces - defeated one of the top teams in the league, SG Alpine Warriors, knocking them off course to reach the finals.
The upGrad Mumba Masters were the slight favourites. The team led by Maxime-Vachier Lagrave was always around the top but slipped in the final days. Chingari Gulf Titans were on the bottom of the board and struggling. Still, they had the advantage of white pieces.
Ganges Grandmasters were dominating the League from the outset but then suffered two consecutive defeats, leaving them on 12 match points and in second place. For the result, but also for their psychological stability, Ganges Grandmasters had to make a comeback.
Both the Titans and the Kings started round eight at the bottom of the scoreboard, struggling in the league
THE GLOBAL CHESS LEAGUE'S inaugural edition continues on its seventh day.
The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League delivered another round of gripping clashes as the Chingari Gulf Titans triumphed over the event leaders, Ganges Grandmasters, with a score of 9:7. In another intense battle, the upGrad Mumba Masters emerged victorious against the Triveni Continental Kings, securing the win on the final two boards.
It was a bitter-sweet moment for upGrad Mumba Masters’ player Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. While the Frenchman overpowered Magnus Carlsen, his team fell short by a point against the rivals in the fifth match of the Global Chess League being played in Dubai.
