THE WEST BENGAL state government wants Kolkata to have its 3 major clubs all playing in the Indian Super League.
In the past, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting have shared many famous battles in the top division league of India. But Mohammedan Sporting have not played in the top tier since their relegation in the 2013-14 season.
It seems, the government is interested in renewing that three-pronged rivalry in the top division once again to make Kolkata the focal point of ISL and Indian football.
Recently, WB chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited the club to inaugurate their newly renovated tent. There, she said that she wanted MSC to play in the ISL and announced an incentive of Rs 60 lakhs to help them make it happen.
MSC are currently the two time defending champions of Calcutta Football League and their national level performance has also gotten better since the arrival of new investor Bunkerhill. The club will have a shot at winning their way to ISL when they play in I-League 2023-24.
