CFL 2023 HIGHLIGHTS: East Bengal held to a shock draw by Behala Sanskritik Sammilani
EAST BENGAL WERE HELD to a draw by Behala Sanskritik Sammilani in the Calcutta Football League today.
It's the second major upset result in CFL 2023 in just a few days; after defending champions Mohammedan Sporting Club were shocked by Diamond Harbour FC just day before yesterday.
East Bengal, who are fielding their youth team in the CFL this season, are still undefeated; while coming into this match BSS were near the bottom of the Group B points table with zero wins to their name so far.
However, the heavily defensive strategy of BSS mostly neutralised the young EB attack. Throughout most of the game, East Bengal struggled to find their break-through.
But ultimately it came; in the 89th minute, when Dip Saha found the net off a free kick for the Red and Golds.
It appeared as though East Bengal had managed to avoid dropping points against a low-ranked team and regained their place at the top of the group; but deep into added time Sourav Sen found the equalizer for Behala; courtesy a massive defensive mix-up from EB.
The shock draw has left East Bengel on the thid positio on the table; with 8 points from 4 matches. Bhawanipore FC and Calcutta Customs are ahead of them with 9 points each.
With just the top three teams from each group set to progress to the championship round, it appears that East Bengal may have to face more struggles in their CFL title quest than previously anticipated.
