After Global Chess League, it's time for an IPL-style Indian Chess League

ENCOURAGED BY THE success of Global Chess League, an Indian Chess League is also reportedly in the works.

The All India Chess Federation is launching an IPL-style team-based chess league; and its inaugural season will take place in December 2023.

The AICF will issue tenders for the teams this very month, in July.

AICF President Sanjay Kapoor told the media that the league is going to have six to eight teams. He said,

"We have to change the face of Indian chess. It will be like the IPL... we have to change our mindset to grow. We’ve got to think about our lacunas, our shortcomings and we have to work on that all the time. In three years’ time we will not need any government funding."

However, he said that Indian chess legends like Vishwanathan Anand and Koneru Humpy will also have some roles to play in the new league.
