Danish Farooq’s first goal (5’) of the season turned out to be the winner as Bengaluru FC beat Jamshedpur FC 1-0 in an early kick-off at the Kanteerava Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Saturday. The win moved Simon Grayson’s Blues to 8th position on the table, with ten points from ten games.
The Blues began the game with the sense of urgency it demanded, and with five minutes on the clock, were rewarded with the lead. A swift breakaway involving Javi Hernandez, Sunil Chhetri and Roy Krishna saw the Fijian pick Danish with a cross. The midfielder brought the ball down with a touch on the edge of the box, and used a second to fire the ball past Vishal Yadav to make it 1-0.
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu denied Ishan Pandita the chance to bring Jamshedpur back into the game, getting fingertips to the striker’s attempt from in the box that then hit the post before the Bengaluru defence dealt with the danger.
Just a little before halftime, Namgyal Bhutia had the chance to bag his first goal for the club after yet another smart transition in attack. The youngster, however, hit his take straight at Yadav, as the Blues took the one-goal lead to the dressing room.
Five minutes into the second half, Hernandez - Bengaluru’s man in form - saw a sweetly struck shot with his right, crash off the post, as Grayson’s men pushed in search of a two-goal cushion. The Benglauru manager rang in two changes with twenty minutes to play for - replacing Chhetri and Suresh Wangjam with new signing Pablo Perez and Rohit Kumar. The Spaniard could have scored with his first involvement in the game, but his effort after a free-flowing Bengaluru attack saw Yadav come off his line and make the save.
The woodwork would deny Bengaluru once again, this time Krishna having to see his flicked header come off the crossbar. The Blues return to the Fortress on Friday next, as they take on Hyderabad FC.
