I-League 2017-18 -- Khalid Jamil's comment irks Aizawl fans, FIR lodged, East Bengal bus blocked

KHALID JAMIL DID NOT JUST lose points when East Bengal visited Aizawl FC, it seems he has lost his popularity with the fans there as well.

The East Bengal team bus was blocked on its way back to the team hotel after the game by local fans, and even an FIR has been allegedly registered against him following some remarks he made in the pre-match press conference.

Yesterday, speaking to the press, Khalid Jamil alleged that he did not leave Aizawl FC on his own, that he wanted to stay but the club management forced him to leave the club and join East Bengal.

The veteran head coach's comments sparked anger among the local fans who hailed him as a hero only months ago when he led Aizawl FC to a historic I-League triumph.

Some local fans brought a large banner to the stadium branding Jamil a 'traitor' and there was visible tension between him anb current Aizawl FC coach Paulo Menezes.

Aizawl FC fans protest Khalid Jamil

After the match, the East Bengal team bus was stopped by some angry Aizawl FC fans, who vented their anger at the coach for his words at the press conference. There was, however, no vandalism or violence; no one was hurt and no property damaged.

UPDATE: The reports of an FIR being lodged against Khalid Jamil, which originated from a press release issued by an Aizawl FC fan club, are inaccurate. Although the fans approached the police about filing an FIR in light of Jamil's comments, the police refused to do so and told them that since the claim is that of defamation, they should take this matter to civil court.
